INNOVATION and the latest thinking on sustainability were showcased to 60 people at an event in Huddersfield – and they came away with some amazing facts about water.

These included that one pint of beer takes 114 pints of water to create.

The TEDx event, held at the Odeon Cinema in Huddersfield, was organised by Yorkshire Water and showcased innovative ideas loosely themed around water and sustainability.

The day called ‘Together we can all make a difference’ attracted people from all over the region to hear talks on topics as diverse as the impact of wind turbines on marine life off the Holderness coast, and the cradle-to-cradle strategy of a carpet manufacturer.

Speakers from the worlds of science, business, engineering, technology and design were mixed with videos from the TED Talks website, which is renowned for its use of new and exciting ways to engage audiences.

Other of the facts and figures that emerged from the day included:

It takes 10 litres of water to make a laptop

55 Olympic-sized swimming pools could be filled with the water saved by everyone in the UK showering for a minute less each day.

Matt Thompson (pictured) from Yorkshire Water said: “We were delighted with the turnout and with the debate that came after the talks.

“We are always looking for new and innovative ideas. Events like this one provide a great platform”.
