THIS is the new Yorkshire Regiment's Army cap badge under which thousands of soldiers will serve and fight.

Next year the 2,000 soldiers belonging to the county's three infantry regiments - the Duke of Wellington's, Green Howards and Prince of Wales's Own - will take off their current badge and pin on the new insignia, representing the new "super regiment."

The new design was agreed by the Yorkshire Regiment formation committee, comprising senior retired servicemen from all three regiments.

It has been negotiating how the historic "golden threads" of each regiment can be recognised in the new unit which includes the three regular units as well as one Territorial Army battalion.

The new regiment will also get to keep the Duke's, who recruit from Huddersfield, "Yorkshire Warriors" nickname.

Four hundred soldiers from the amalgamating regiments attended a sound and light extravaganza in York last night. Sir Richard Dannatt KCB CBE MC addressed the crowd and was followed by a fanfare before the new badge was unveiled.

An image of the badge was beamed onto Clifford's Tower before musical performances from the combined Waterloo and Normandy bands and a firework display.

Lt Col Mark Lodge, spokesman for the new regiment, said: "This is a unique opportunity for us to restructure whilst retaining the very best of over 300 years of military tradition.

" The newly formed regiment will enable us to meet the operational challenges of today's Army while making sure we can meet the aspirations and needs of our soldiers."
