A man who never had a driving licence has been sent to prison for driving while banned.

Rustam Jurevicius of School street in Ravensthorpe – who said he is an illegal worker at Kozee Beds in Dewsbury – was sentenced to eight weeks in prison at Kirklees Magistrates Court.

Jurevicius, 29, was caught by police on Huddersfield Road in Dewsbury on April 17, only five days after a banning order had been imposed for driving without a licence or insurance.

According to Bill Astin, prosecuting, it was the second time Jurevicius from Lithuania had ignored a ban given for the same reasons.

“He was stopped after triggering a police camera,” Mr Astin said.

“He had previously been disqualified until September 15, 2015 and another three month ban for the same type of offences had just been imposed.”

The case was stood down while a probation report was prepared which revealed more about Jurevicius’s past.

It revealed that he said he was coming back from a failed attempt to sell his car when he was stopped.

“He didn’t think that he would get caught because he was going at night”, said the probation officer.

“He told me he has never had a driving licence and wasn’t able to have a discussion about UK driving laws.

“He also said that he works illegally as a mattress packer for Kozee Beds in Dewsbury where he gets paid £5 an hour for six hours, five days a week.

“His wife and two children are currently living in Lithuania.

“He has a poor insight into his behaviour and has a cavalier and opportunist approach.”

Mitigating Raja Afzal, said: “He admitted his offence at first opportunity and knows that it was a silly mistake.”

District judge Michael Fanning chastised Jurevicius and sentenced him to eight weeks, of which he will serve four.

“The order is there to protect the public from you”, he said.

“You were gambling with other users lives.”
