Do you know how to spot a rogue trader from the real deal?
The alert has been sounded by West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service (WYTSS) in a bid to tackle rogue traders who target vulnerable people for work such as roof repairs and garden clearance services or offer them knives, kitchen utensils or cleaning apparatus at “reduced” prices.
WYTSS also appealed to people to look out for elderly, the disabled, vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbours to ensure they were not conned by unscrupulous traders.
Tactics used by rogue doorstep traders included deliberate targeting of elderly, confused or vulnerable consumers; offering goods at “reduced” prices; scaring consumers into having work carried out; advising that work is needed when it isn’t; starting work which has been agreed then “finding” extra work that adds to the price; and trying to get into the house under the guise of needing the toilet or wanting to get a drink – then carrying out a distraction burglary.
WYTSS advised householders to use a door chain to check on callers; report any suspicious activity; and keep purses and wallets hidden away from sight.
Suspicious activity should be reported to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506.”
