It was been a busy day for the emergency services yesterday (Monday) with crashes on the M62 and a trapped man cut out of his car in Fartown.

But the problems began at 1.45am on Longley Road, Longley, when the male driver of a white Vauxhall Zafira lost control and hit a tree causing it to overturn.

Anyone who saw the collision should contact the police on 101.

Hours later at 8.30am on Central Avenue, Fartown, the male driver of a Vauxhall Corsa had to be cut out of his crashed vehicle. He was not seriously hurt.

And 45 minutes later a driver had a lucky escape when his car suddenly burst into flames as he drove along Leeds Road and Southgate inbetween Chickanos and Kirklees Media Centre.

Shocked passersby captured the billowing plumes of smoke pouring from the Citreon Berlingo on camera at 9.15am.

The problems continued on the M62 with traffic queueing at Ainley Top at 3pm following an accident on the eastbound carriageway at Junction 25 near Brighouse.

Police said three vehicles were involved, a black Renault Clio, a black Vauxhall Astra and a black Audi A5. No injuries were reported.

And a dog lost its life after straying onto the third lane of the M62 westbound at Junction 26, Chain Bar near Cleckheaton.

Car fire on Huddersfield ring road

Police are also appealing for witnesses following a collision at Common Lane, near to the junction of Windmill Hill Lane, Emley Moor, on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred at 7.10pm when a blue Fiat Stilo and LandRover Defender collided at the junction causing the Fiat Stilo to smash into the side of a house.

The driver of the Stilo, a 36-year-old man had to be rescued from his vehicle by firefighters and is receiving treatment in hospital for a number of serious injuries.

He was in a stable condition in hospital yesterday (Monday). The driver of the Landrover Defender, a 55-year-old man and the female passenger suffered minor injuries.

Pc Sean Hepworth said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and may have seen either the collision itself, or either vehicle prior to the collision to get in touch. Enquiries are ongoing.”
