THREE Huddersfield babies will have a starring role in the 2012 London Olympics.

And although two of them may not yet be able to walk, Harry Kaye, Lauren Hirst and Ethan McHugh will all make history six years from now.

The trio, who celebrated their first birthdays yesterday, have been registered to take part through the London 2012 Children's Promise, which was made to babies born on 2012 Day - December 20, 2004.

Last December organisers pledged to give every child born on December 20, 2004, the chance to play a role in the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games if the British bid was successful.

Harry Kaye, who is the first son of Deborah and James Kaye, of Broad Field Park, Holmbridge, was due on January 7, and made an unexpected arrival on December 20 when Deborah's blood pressure shot up.

"We are both big sports fans, so it must have been for a reason that Harry arrived on the day," said Deborah.

"He's very cheeky and mischievous. The health visitor said after he was born he was a real character and he is certainly living up to the expectation."

Lauren Grace Hirst, the first child of Michael and Lynn Hirst, of Arlington Way, Dalton is the only girl of the Huddersfield Olympic three.

Lynn said Lauren was a "lovely even-tempered little girl, quite shy, but enjoyed by family and friends alike."

Ethan McHugh is a second son for Joanne McHugh, of Church Lane, Moldgreen. He has a three-year-old brother Bradley.

He is the first off the starting blocks in the walking stakes, having trod his first footsteps a month ago and is now "into everything."

"He's a very happy baby, adventurous and cheeky," said Joanne.

Almost 300 babies nationwide registered to take part and have received a certificate confirming their role in events such as the opening ceremonies, closing ceremonies or team welcome ceremonies.

Bid chairman Sebastian Coe said: "The Olympics is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us all and the London 2012 Children's Promise has made it extra special for the children and families who can get involved."
