YOUNGSTERS with special needs enjoyed taking part in a cricket festival.

The event, hosted by Holmfirth Cricket Club, involved pupils from Castle Hill (New-some), Longley and Lydgate (New Mill) schools.

Children took part in cricket-based activities, including catching, hitting and throwing.

Tony Eustace, the club’s chief coach, said: “It was the first event of its kind that the club has hosted and it was most enjoyable.

“All the children behaved extremely well and worked very hard and enjoyed themselves. The support from the schools and staff was first rate.”

During the event trophies and certificates were awarded to each school.

The event, which the club plans to expand next year, came about after Mr Eustace went into local special schools and worked with them, with support from the Yorkshire Cricket Board.

The club recently hosted a primary schools tournament, which was attended by 150 children from the Holme Valley.

Mr Eustace added: “It’s very important for Holmfirth Cricket Club to be seen to be working in the community.”

It has just achieved Clubmark status, which recognises the quality of the club and its contribution to cricket life and development in the Holme Valley.
