Kirklees Council is to consider people’s ideas for cutting its costs.

And while no-one has offered a ‘golden egg’ to balance Kirklees Council’s books, there are several suggestions being put forward the council is exploring.

More communication will be done online, for Ruth Redfern, Director of Communities, says it “costs pence instead of face-to-face which costs pounds”.

They are looking at waste and recycling suggestions, saying even confusion about what can be recycled and putting the wrong thing in the green bin has a cost.

Income generation is another area they are exploring, but Mrs Redfern says it needs to be balanced against putting private firms at risk.

She said: “People told us they want us as a council to support local businesses, and they themselves want to do more to support local businesses.

“Together with income generation ideas we’re looking at what we can do, but that requires balance against the private sector.

“We certainly don’t want to end up setting ourselves up against businesses and creating job losses elsewhere.”

Also, since a dedicated consultation on library services launched on Monday, hundreds of people have already had a say.

Within four hours of the consultation opening 200 people had commented and some libraries had run out of paper copies. The specific consultation runs until April 10.
