WORK starts next week on the Christmas ice rink in Huddersfield town centre.

And Kirklees Council officials are expecting thousands to don their skates.

The rink, on The Piazza, will be open to the public from December 4 until January 4, with skating every day except Christmas Day.

After its huge success last year Huddersfield on Ice 2008 promises to be bigger and better than ever. It will be the only outdoor ice-rink in Yorkshire to feature ice bumper cars and organisers claim they have stepped up a gear.

Clr Ken Sims, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Huddersfield on Ice has become a regular feature on Huddersfield’s Christmas calendar.

“Not only does it give everyone the chance to skate in their local area, it also provides jobs and encourages shoppers to do their Christmas shopping in the town centre rather than going elsewhere”.

Tickets are already on sale and skaters are urged to book early to avoid disappointment.

Prices are frozen at last year’s rates and several special discounts are available.
