HUDDERSFIELD MP Barry Sheerman has welcomed plans for improved youth services.

The MP, who chairs the Education and Skills Select Committee, today welcomed the Government's Youth Green Paper.

Mr Sheerman said: "I have long campaigned to improve the facilities available for young people in Huddersfield.

"I am pleased that the long-awaited discussion paper contains many exciting ideas for improving youth services."

The proposals include giving young people more things to do and places to go in their local area; more say in how services are delivered; and better information, advice and guidance.

Proposals for `opportunity cards' would reward young people who are involved in positive activities.

Mr Sheerman said: "It is right that we should recognise and reward `social behaviour' instead of always focusing our attention on `anti-social behaviour'.

"I meet lots of fantastic young people in my education work and we should positively promote and celebrate their roles in our communities."

A consultation on the proposals in the Green Paper has been launched.
