According to a recent report, many of us believe that multigenerational households are the future.
With an ageing population and financial constraints to contend with, two thirds of the 2000 adults predicted that they may have to consider living with extended family members like elderly relatives or adult children in the near future. Of those surveyed, over half said their current property would not be suitable accommodation for all generations.
From companionship to care costs, childcare to financial considerations, there are many reasons that families may choose to cohabit. Paul Keighley, Residential Partner at Bramley's Estate Agent, said: “There are obvious benefits with the arrangement, older members of the family are more closely bonded to younger generations, financial assets can be pooled enabling a larger property to be bought, and everyone can care and support one another in the family unit.
“Childcare also becomes less of an issue which brings with it an increase in a bonded family unit. The right property can make or break these living arrangements. Space and independence is important for harmony!”
However, finding a home with an annexe isn't always easy and they can be rare to the market place. There are alternatives though, including attic conversions, garages and extensions. Of course, these will each come with their own considerations, for example an attic with stair access is best for teenagers and an extension is dependant on the plot your home is situated on, availability of funds, and planning consent.
Paul continued: “Stonearch is one such home with an annexe suite that has recently come onto the market with Bramley's Mirfield office.
“It's an individually designed, stone built, five bedroom executive family home at the head of a small development. It offers 4000 sq ft of accommodation and incorporates a self contained annexe suite ideal for a live-in parent or teenager.
It has been finished to a high specification with no expense spared on the quality fixtures and fittings. Stonearch also has two double garages, gated grounds and all five bedrooms have their own en suite, making it a perfect choice for multi generational family living.”
