As a late Victorian period property, this week’s Our House at Moor Lane, Netherton has been a much-loved family home for well over 30 years.

When owner June Butterworth and her late husband John, bought the detached house, it did need a lot of work doing to it as it had been used as a rental property for several years.

She said: “John was a very keen DIY expert and carried out an awful lot of improvements to the house. After moving in we also managed to extend the back garden as well so it is a really good size. Most people who come to the house are really surprised when they see the back garden.’’

June and John moved into the Moor Lane house in 1977 after previously living close by in Delph Lane, Netherton.

“We lived in Netherton ever since we got married in 1954 and now, when I move again, I want to stay here in the village.

“I’m looking for a bungalow at the moment in the Netherton area. It’s a nice village with a selection of shops but still quite close to Huddersfield town centre.’’

June’s house was built in 1900, making it late Victorian and full of period character.

The house is beautifully presented and has many original features, including ceiling roses, archways and coving, which give it real character.

One of John’s tasks when the couple moved to Moor Lane was to replace the front door.

June said: “John managed to find a new door somewhere in Milnsbridge, which was quite difficult as the door is extra wide. He used some original coloured glass which he found in the garage and created a beautiful door which is a real feature of the house.

Walk in through the front door and you’ll find a spacious hallway leading to two large reception rooms: the front is used as a dining room and the rear a spacious lounge overlooking the garden.

Downstairs there is the kitchen, a cellar with full workshop, ideal for any DIY enthusiast and a utility room with plumbing for a washing machine, dryer etc. There is also access into the single garage and a porch area leading to a back door into the garden.

Upstairs there are four good-sized bedrooms and the family bathroom. In the late 1960s, before June and John moved to the house, an extension was added over the garage which created a fourth bedroom. Today it would be ideal for us as a guest room or teenage den.

One of the real surprises of this property is the rear garden which includes lawned areas, established trees and bushes, paths and borders.

June said: “When the neighbouring houses in Beaumont Street were built, we were able to extend our garden slightly, which made a real difference. ’’

This period property would make an ideal home for a growing family looking for a spacious property in a village setting.

The property is being marketed by Bridgfords estate agents 01484 887017.
