AUSTRALIAN Shaun McRae was this morning expected to be unveiled as the successor to Karl Harrison as head coach at Salford.
The City Reds, who whittled their applications down to a three-man short-list, completed their interviews on Friday and are thought to have told McRae last night he was their man.
McRae, 48, who coached throughout the first nine seasons of Super League with St Helens, Gateshead and Hull, has been keen to get back into coaching since quitting his post as director of rugby at South Sydney last year.
He returned to England a fortnight ago to take up a short-term contract with Sky Sports to act as summariser and will be available to take up the position with immediate effect.
Former Bradford and Great Britain hooker James Lowes was also in the running after helping guide Salford to a shock win over Huddersfield and pushing champions St Helens to within a point last week.
Despite their win over Huddersfield, the Reds remain rooted to the foot of Super League, three points adrift of their nearest rivals, and face a crucial home game against Harlequins on Friday night when McRae is expected to be in charge.
