Moor take remarkable match

EMLEY MOOR produced an amazing second-half fightback to win 36-32 at Thornhill Trojans A in the first round of the Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy.

At half-time, the visitors looked dead and buried as they trailed 30-2 against a Thornhill team boosted by four players from their National Conference League Premier Division side, who had the weekend off.

All coach Pete Southwell’s side had to show for their first-half efforts was a penalty from John Roebuck.

But at the start of the second period, the tide began to turn in dramatic fashion.

With Moor having absolutely nothing to lose, they threw caution to the wind and were soon reaping the rewards.

Within minutes of the restart, Dave Pawson crossed for a try – and Emley were on their way.

Moments later Jason Southwell crashed over and Karl Adamski quickly followed up, with Roebuck adding all three conversions to make it 30-20 and give the first hint of a remarkable fightback.

Pawson then added his second to reduce the deficit further before Thornhill finally grabbed themselves a lifeline with a penalty to make it 32-24 as the game entered its closing stages.

However, Moor were far from finished.

With five minutes remaining, Southwell again barged his way over and Roebuck converted to makwe it 32-30 and in injury-time fellow former Giants player Glen Holdsworth, pictured right, charged over for another converted try to secure a remarkable victory.

It was an incredible finish to an incredible game in which youngsters James Utley, James Parmentor and Scott Wilkinson all came into their own.
