Saracens savour Cup win

SLAITHWAITE Saracens broke their hoodoo as they gained their first victory at Littleborough to progress into the second round of the Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy.

And they did it in excellent fashion as they powered to a convincing 30-4 victory.

From the opening set of six, Slaithwaite made their intentions clear with Chris Broadhead squeezing in at the corner.

Five minutes later Littleborough drew level, but that was just the signal for the Saracens to step up a gear.

After 15 minutes Darren Hawkyard went over to put the visitors back in front and give his side a lead they were never to lose.

A penalty and try from Dave Holmes, pictured, made it 14-4 at the break, and Slaithwaite already had one foot in round two.

As the conditions worsened in the second half, the Saracens were unable to play their normal open rugby and it was left to the forwards, led by prop Mick Mellor, to take charge.

Lee Mason was the first to cross in the second half and this was followed up with further scores from Mark Boothroyd and Mick Bostock, with Boothroyd converting both to complete the scoring.
