ST JOSEPH’S have taken the first step in their bid to set up a fully-fledged junior rugby league section.

The club are holding an open day at Fartown on Saturday, May 31 at 10.15 for any players from the age of seven to 16 who would be interested in playing the game at a competitive level.

There will be a free drink for every youngster turning up on the day, with event organiser and St Joseph’s open-age coach Bert MacKay – who is helping Great Britain international Keith Senior with the Pennine League Premier Division side – hoping it proves a big success.

“Many clubs in Huddersfield now have flourishing junior sections, but St Joseph’s seem to be lagging behind,” said MacKay.

“We do have an Under 17s side who have done really well, but we would love to build on that and start competing with other Huddersfield clubs at all ages.

“Obviously, this open day at the end of the month is the first step.

“Once we’ve seen how many kids turn up we’ll have more of an idea how many sides we may be able to field.”
