RL: Nine-try Underbank cruise to derby win
HUDDERSFIELD Underbank Rangers notched an emphatic 50-12 win in their derby clash away at Dewsbury Celtic.
The nine-try victory sees Rangers remain in fourth place in the Conference National, but they are within striking distance of Nottingham Outlaws above them and second-placed Hemel Stags.
However, it was home side Celtic who made the early running and they cruised into the lead with tries from hooker Nathan Hadfield, created by full back Pat Foulstone after he returned a Rangers kick, and winger Aiden Anderson – both goal attempts going begging.
Underbank’s woes seemed to be building as Richard Lofthouse spilled the ball at the line as he seemed sure to score, but Rangers soon made amends when impressive second rower Gary Keegan’s charge took him over at the corner.
They were soon level after Dewsbury coughed up possession near their own line and Joe Worthington sent Carl Leach over to level the scores.
Rangers hit a purple patch before the interval with Keegan at the hub and it was his off-load that put Tom Senior through to give Rangers the lead, full-back Chris Thorley added the goal.
Leach then created a try for Keegan and Thorley nipped over from close range and he added the goal to give Underbank a 24-8 half-time advantage.
Celtic started the second period strongly and cut the deficit when stand off Scott Dyson’s pass freed Foulstone to sprint 70 yards for a try in the corner.
