UNDERBANK RANGERS are determined to make tomorrow’s final home game of the regular Co-operative Conference National campaign a day to remember.
The newly-crowned champions will be presented with the League Leader’s Shield at the end of the derby clash with Dewsbury Celtic at The Cross (kick-off 2.30pm).
It’s the first time Rangers have collected a piece of silverware at this level and they will be hoping to double their tally in the Grand Final at Warrington on October 2.
And player-coach Richard Knight knows tasting Final glory at the third attempt in a month’s time will be a far more likely prospect if his side can finish with a bang tomorrow and take some top form into the play-offs.
Bank already know they will host Kippax Knights in a fortnight in a match where the winners go straight to Warrington, with Knight hoping all the play-off signs will be positive after being involved in what he knows with be a typically tough derby clash tomorrow.
“Our form over the past couple of months hasn’t been the greatest,” said Knight, who will be picking from a 24-man squad this weekend.
“Our goalline defence, in particular, has been a bit of concern, and that’s something we’ve been working on in the recent training sessions.
“We know it’s going to be put to the test against Celtic this weekend, and if we pass that test then I know it’ll give us a lot of confidence for our play-off game against Kippax.
“You can tell with the way the players have all trained this week that having last weekend off (due to the Challenge Cup final) has freshened everyone up. They trained better on Tuesday than they have all year.
“So we’re hopeful that’s going to be reflected in tomorrow’s performance.
“It’s going to be a very special day for the club, because it’s the first time we’ve won the League Leader’s Shield, and we want to make sure we collect it after putting in a performance that’s worthy of the minor champions.
