Amateur RL: Meltham All Blacks the toast of Huddersfield on the opening day

MELTHAM All Blacks were the only success story for Huddersfield clubs in action on the opening day of the Pennine League season.

While there were defeats for Emley Moor, Newsome Panthers and Moldgreen, there were no such problems for the All Blacks as they cruised to a 24-0 Division V home triumph over Whitworth Spartans.

By half-time, the hosts were already in complete control as they opened up a 20-0 interval advantage.

Ben Moorhouse set the ball rolling with the All Blacks’ first try of the 2011-12 campaign and Mikey Holmes followed up with the second, which Moorhouse converted.

Adam Lodge then scored two quick tries and Scott Quarmby added one of the goals to give Meltham their big lead at the break.

Whitworth came at Meltham strongly at the start of the second half, but the hosts’ fitness showed and the defence held firm before Phil Stanislaus crossed in the final play of the game to seal a very satisfying victory.

This fixture was followed 24 hours later by another game at Meltham as the All Blacks held the first Kirklees Masters Rugby League fixture, with an excellent feast of rugby league against a gallant Ossett Trinity team.

The game was played at break-neck speed and, even though a lot of tries were scored, the Masters tradition dictated the final score would be 0-0!

This match also incorporated an All Blacks Fun Day and raised a healthy amount from the attractions that surrounded the Masters encounter.
