Amateur RL: Underbank Rangers book Grand Final spot with victory over Hemel Stags

UNDERBANK are through to Sunday’s Co-operative Conference National Grand Final!

After missing out to Kippax at the first attempt a week ago, the minor champions made no mistake second time around with a 40-12 triumph over Hemel Stags at The Cross.

The victory means Rangers will be heading to Warrington Wolves’ Halliwell Jones Stadium in six days time for a third consecutive Grand Final appearance.

Standing in their way of securing the title for the first time are the in-form Knights, with Bank keen to gain revenge for their 17-8 play-off defeat nine days ago.

Underbank will obviously need to be at their best to finally lift the Grand Final crown.

But the weekend clash against a valiant and gutsy Stags outfit will have been an excellent dress rehearsal, with their visitors making it a real contest for the first hour before falling away late on.

It had all looked so very different during the opening stages as the powerful Stags’ pack rampaged up The Cross slope.

But the introduction from the bench of talismanic hooker Andy Boothroyd changed the whole complexion of the game.

After trailing by eight points after 26 minutes, Boothroyd turned the game on its head to help Rangers open up an 18-8 lead and put them well on the road to Warrington.

Within three minutes of his introduction, he was pulling the attacking strings and playing a significant part as full-back Sam Hendrick opened his side’s account by racing over from 20m.
