LONGWOOD ‘Super Veterans’ Gordon Booth and Sheila Ely landed a double victory in the challenging Lowther Run, staged in Cumbria.

Held over 13 miles, and with around 1,500ft of climbing, it is a strenuous event for anyone, but 77-year-old Booth beat both the course and the stiff opposition to finish first in his category.

Along the way he beat last year’s winner Ian Addison of Keswick AC, and the first-ever winner (staged 25 years ago), Peter Taylor of Cumberland Fell Runners, finishing 101st out of 154, in a time of 2.06-27.

Ely battled round the revamped course which included trackless boggy terrain, crossing the River Lowther and a 600ft climb over Knipe Scar, to finish in 2.35-16 in 142nd position and win the Ladies Veterans 60 race.

Both Longwood runners were awarded Cumbria Crystal glassware and vouchers and it continued their success after recent good runs in the Burn Valley half marathon and Harrogate 10k races.
