Bowls: We have to kick on from here says Yorkshire home team bowling manager Keith Hatzer

YORKSHIRE are reflecting on a first County Championship title in 13 years and home team manager Keith Hatzer says: “We have to kick on from here.”

The senior men’s team – featuring a host of Huddersfield-area bowlers – ended over a decade of hurt when landing the title in a 426-399 victory over Shropshire.

Added to successes for the women’s and junior teams, it’s been an eventful year in Yorkshire bowling and Hatzer believes the quality is there to sustain the success.

“We have got a lot of young players available to us and they are totally fearless,” said Hatzer, who was away team manager for six years before taking charge of the home team three years ago.

“It’s a fantastic achievement to win the Crossfield Cup, but I’ve told the lads they can be top contenders for as long as they want to be.

“To have three lads in their 20s in the top four in a county championship winning team of any kind is absolutely brilliant.

“The obvious target is to go and win it again next year, and it’s imperative we kick on from here.

“Over the last 10 years and more we’ve had to take a lot of kick-back from people and we’ve had to work hard to turn things around, get out of the old ways and get these fine young players into the set-up.

“The team spirit they’ve got is incredible and, as I’ve said, they don’t fear anyone. It doesn’t matter who they are up against they are not worried, they will tackle anyone.”
