Swimming: BoK celebrate after four golds

BOROUGH of Kirklees are celebrating one of their most successful North Eastern Counties Championships.

Four of the club's swimmers struck gold, while many others picked up second and third places in the face of strong opposition.

But leading the way were obviously NEC winners Seb Rios, Suzanna Kaminski, Alex Shoemark and Sam Cartwright.

Rios, in particular, will have been feeling on top of the world after claiming his first ever title to reward his commitment and hard work over many years.

He swam a personal best of 4min 52.7sec to take gold in the men's 400m individual medley and also picked up three other medals.

There was also a first NEC title for Shoemark, who won the junior 50m backstroke in 30.1sec, with clubmate Tom McAvoy second. Shoemark also grabbed a silver and a bronze.

Kaminski may have been short of fitness but still secured a good win in a close women's 100m butterfly in 1-05.1.

But she couldn't quite land a second win in the 50m event, having to settle for second.

And although not swimming at his best, Cartwright still did enough to take the junior 400m freestyle title in 4-22.3.

He also just missed out on a second title when finishing second in the 200m freestyle, while he also had two thirds.

The other BoK swimmer to secure a silver was Ian Perrell in the junior 50m backstroke.

While Perrell, Gareth Noble and Deb Crossland picked up bronze medals, so too did the women's 400m medley team of Crossland, Mitchell, Kaminski and Siddons and the men's 800m freestyle team of Cartwright, Blackford, Turton and Rios.
