YORKSHIRE county squad member Sam Jewell of Bradford (Hawksworth), posted the low score of the second round, a one-over-par 71, to deny Tim Seaton, the club manager at Fixby, victory in the Earl of Dartmouth Trophy at Woodsome Hall.

No-one bettered the par of 70 in the high winds that buffeted the Eagle Golf-Yorkshire Order of Merit event but veteran Seaton, 52, a former Cambridgeshire county player, showed many younger players the way as he tagged a 75 on to a 73 that set the clubhouse lead on 148.

Only Jewell, 20, among Yorkshire’s up and coming players, showed the ability in the tough conditions to make a challenge.

The son of Derby County manager Paul disappointed in his lone previous merit start this season, a joint fifth place in his home club’s Hawksworth Trophy, but he produced solid golf in the second round and came through to win by two shots from Seaton with what was an outstanding 71 after he had opened with a 75.

In the final reckoning Seaton was left regretting a triple bogey six at the short third in the afternoon, though he seemed to have done enough for victory when he covered the back nine in a one-under 34.

Richard Law, the Yorkshire and Leeds Union boys captain from Low Laithes, finished two back from Seaton in third place in an event from which pre-tournament favourite Sam Haywood, the Order of Merit leader from Rotherham, and Fixby’s Neil Williams were among withdrawals.

Luke Maguire, a junior at Howley Hall who will line up for Leeds against the Halifax, Huddersfield Union on Sunday week, had led at the halfway stage on 71, two ahead of Seaton and Woodsome Hall vice-captain Dr Graham Cox, but he then became one of 20 players to post no returns while Cox struggled to 82 and fell back into the pack.

That left Woodsome Hall’s Richard Holt as the next best local finisher in fifth place, six off the pace, a shot better than Union champion Richard Broadley.

Defending champion Chris Dyson, seeking a hat-trick of home-club wins, finished well back on 160 in 24th spot, damaging his hopes with a first round 85.

STEVEN WHITELEY led Meltham to the Halifax, Huddersfield Union Handicap Team championship at Saddleworth where the Thick Hollins club’s four-man team claimed the Jack Sykes Trophy following a card play-off against Huddersfield, who tied on the same 357 total.

Whiteley, a 12 handicap player, shot 80, which Longley Park eight handicapper John Doherty bettered by three strokes, but the Meltham man, a recent newcomer to the Union executive and brother of championship sponsor Robert Whiteley, was an individual winner, taking the prize for the best net score of 68.

There is no prize for best individual gross and Doherty was further unfortunate in that his Longley Park team was one of three to make no returns after one of his teammates was unable to post a score.

Whiteley had sound back-up from Andrew Steel, Andrew Hirst and Martin Butterworth in an event in which teams must include a player of not less than eight handicap and ones with handicaps of not less than 10, 12 and 14.
