Cricket: Tributes paid to long serving stalwarts

MELTHAM’s Richard Dodson has stepped down as team manager of Huddersfield’s Joe Lumb Cup cricket side after being the most successful man in charge since the competition began over 40 years ago.

Dodson, coincidentally, was the first-ever captain of Huddersfield’s Joe Lumb side, but it was as ‘boss’ that he enjoyed the most success, helping his young charges to many victories, including three finals, and winning the trophy outright once.

He was presented with a special memento to recognise the tremendous work he has put in over the years, while another award went to Linthwaite’s Donald Wood, who has served the Manchester Road club for 53 years.

Dodson and Wood are pictured with some of the award-winning junior cricketers at the presentation held at Meltham Cricket Club.

In the Under 17s, Kirkburton’s Luke Booth won the Section Batting prize, followed by Abdul Wahid (Slaithwaite), Louis Sykes (Scholes) and Eddie Wilson (Golcar).

The bowling went to Leo Berry (Thongsbridge), along with Danny Wood (Clayton West), Jack Smith (Marsden) and Oliver Shaw (Almondbury Wes).

Catches: Ryan Blackburn (Cumberworth), Jack Owen (Lascelles Hall), Jordan Steeples (Meltham) and Tom Garner (Almondbury Wes).

Wicketkeeping: Jacob Waterson (Rastrick), Alex Clegg (Clayton West), Nathan Shaw (Marsden), Tom Boorman (Scholes).

George Boothroyd Trophy, all-rounder: Louis Sykes (Scholes).

Under 15s : Batting Jack Hendy (Golcar). Bowling: George Watts (Green Moor). Catching: Ian Walker (Shepley), Charlie Mitchell (Kirkheaton), Alex Daniel (Marsden). Wicketkeeping: Lewis Workman (Kirkburton). Geoff Howard trophy, all-rounder: Danny Firth (Denby Dale).

WORCESTERSHIRE have named opening batsman Daryl Mitchell their captain for 2011 – and he has celebrated by signing a new four-year contract.

Mitchell took over on a temporary basis for the final five weeks of the season after Vikram Solanki quit following the defeat by Glamorgan.

The 26-year-old academy product lost only one game as skipper in helping to steer the Royals to promotion from Division II of the LV County Championship.
