Junior Cricket: Holmfirth grab junior double

HOLMFIRTH Under 11s are celebrating a Junior ‘double’ after winning the Romida Dawson Cup final with victory over Holme Valley neighbours Thongsbridge, and then repeating the feat against Almondbury Wesleyans just days later to win the ‘Champion of Champions.’

The double marked a tremendous season for the Bridge Fold juniors, which began with a confident victory in the Cup final, played at Holmbridge.

Thongsbridge batted first and were held to 286-9 (nett 214) with Roheel Haseeb claiming two for 23.

And Haseeb was again to the fore when Holmfirth replied making a solid 16, while Thomas Clegg also scored 17 to steer their side to a match-winning total of 295-5, which gave them a nett total of 255, George Mallinson collecting two for 21 for the losers.

Then it was on to the Champion of Champions at Almondbury Wesleyans, where Thongsbridge and Holmfirth were again into the semi-finals.

The first match featured hosts Almondbury Wesleyans against Holmfirth, and it was the new Cup holders who came out on top to reach their second final, where they again found themselves up against the Valley neighbours from the Miry Lane club after Thongsbridge defeated Cumberworth in the second semi-final.

And Holmfirth proved that lightning does strike twice in the same place as once again they outplayed Thongsbridge who again had to bat first and were restricted to 283-10, which reduced their nett total for 203.

Finlay Brook made 17 for Thongsbridge, while once again Haseeb was on the money with the ball in his hands, taking four wickets for just nine runs, backed up by Tom Clegg with two for two.

Haseeb then led the reply with an unbeaten 20, while Keiran Taylor weighed in with 14 as Holmfirth made a hefty 339-5, for a nett tally of 299 to start the double celebrations.

The Oldfield Cup final between Meltham and Slaithwaite at Marsden will resume tonight at 6pm following an inspection at 2pm
