DRAKES Huddersfield League officials have decided to press ahead with today’s opening set of fixtures despite concerns about bad weather.
Heavy rain through the past week has left many fields saturated, but the League Executive have decided against a blanket call-off, even though Sunday’s fixtures in the Heavy Woollen Cup and Crowther Cup have been postponed.
“We are going to try and get the matches in,” said League chairman Trevor Atkinson.
“Obviously the weather has not been encouraging and the forecast is mixed, but re-scheduling a full set of fixtures has caused problems in the past and we feel it’s best to try and play on the opening day of the season.
“It’s not easy to suit everyone in these situations, but we have decided to go ahead – so it is up to clubs to prepare their grounds as normal, for the umpires to make their decisions and, where the weather and conditions are fit, there will be cricket.”
