Lindley Lib through

A STEVE PERRIN strike sparked scenes of celebration as Lindley Lib moved into the fifth round of the West Riding Challenge Trophy.

A STEVE PERRIN strike sparked scenes of celebration as Lindley Lib moved into the fifth round of the West Riding Challenge Trophy.

Proud Perrin’s goal, in extra-time, earned the mid-table Division II outfit a prized scalp with a 2-1 victory against Aberford Albion Reserves.

Aberford, of the Yorkshire Premier Alliance League, had the advantage of the slope in the first half, but the prolific Jimmy Meadows fired Lindley ahead on 10 minutes when his shot screwed in off a post.

Aberford had problems dealing with the pace and accurate passing by Lindley, but they were unable to increase their lead, wasting several good chances to make the game safe.

Aberford bagged an equaliser in the second minute of added time when Lindley failed to clear a corner, and Wrigglesworth hit the ball into the top corner of the net to force extra time.

But only seven minutes had gone when Lindley won a free kick on the edge of the area and up stepped Perrin to blast the ball into the top corner and seal victory.

In Division I, third-placed Newsome ran out comfortable 7-3 winners against Aimbry on a heavy pitch at Newsome Sports College, racing into a two-goal lead inside 10 minutes.

Neil Robshaw put Newsome ahead with a neat finish, having been played through by Dane Thornton, then Jamie Jobarteh notched his first when he reacted to a shot that had come back of the bar.

In-form striker Jobarteh added a third before the break and Anthony Haigh finished from close range after the break, despite a good save from the Aimbry keeper, to put the hosts 4-0 ahead.

As the pitch began to cut up, the only decent football was played out on the wings and Jobarteh’s hat trick came from the right wing after good work from Darren Slattery and Nigel Lyons enabled Jobarteh to smash the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

As Newsome pushed forward for more goals they became sloppy at the back and Aimbry pulled a couple of goals back to make it 5-2.

Jobarteh rounded of a great afternoon by scoring two more to make the score 7-2 and take his personal haul to five before Aimbry scored with a penalty in the final minutes to make the final score 7-3.

Newsome could have made it eight but Jobarteh had a penalty saved by the Aimbry keeper.

The Roses clash in Reserve Division II was won by Wooldale Wanderers, who beat Heyside 2-1.

It was a closely-contested match with an in-form Heyside travelling to Wooldale on the back of a string of good results, while Wooldale’s home form has been superb.

Veteran player-coach Simon Holmes fired Wooldale ahead on 24 minutes when the 45-year-old striker, now in his 28th season with the club, latched onto a fine through ball from Taylor and rolled back the years to calmly slot the ball past advancing keeper Radcliffe.

On 55 minutes Martin Green set up England, whose 25-yard shot beat Radcliffe to give Wooldale a two-goal cushion.

But, as expected, the Oldham club did not give in and showed plenty of determination.

They were rewarded for their endeavours, with 20 minutes remaining, when a tame back pass from Schofield allowed Gaynor to skip in between himself and former Wakefield keeper Chard to reduce the margin to a single goal.

The visitors, with their last throw of the dice, brought on the fresh legs of Cummins, but it wasn’t enough to rob Wooldale of a deserved three points.
