Adam fires Golcar to derby glory
GOLCAR UNITED’S Adam Johnson scored twice to help his side claim an enjoyable away win at local rivals Storthes Hall.
Despite the hosts controlling most of the early first-half possession, United went on to grab a 2-1 victory in the West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division.
Golcar took the lead on 33 minutes when the Hall failed to deal with a cross from the wing. The ball was only half cleared and found Johnson, who tucked the ball into the net.
The Hall looked a rejuvenated side after the break and drew level on 52 minutes when Chris Drew headed home after a Chris Margis cross.
The equaliser lifted the hosts’ spirit who then searched for a second. But, they were caught on an attacking break on 68 minutes.
Andrew Allison intercepted the ball near his own penalty area and ran towards a back-peddling Hall defence.
The ball eventually found Johnson who slotted the ball beyond the hosts’ goalkeeper for a second time.
In-form Meltham’s undefeated run continues following a 5-2 win over Pool to reach the semi-final of the West Riding Challenge Cup.
The victory at Broadlands recreation ground set up a last four encounter with East Lancashire side Barnoldswick Town on Wednesday, March 26.
Athletic, riding high in the West Riding County Amateur League, were last defeated in August – a 6-1 defeat at Ardsley Celtic, but since then they haven’t looked back.
Meltham’s first goal arrived after seven minutes when Adam Mathews supplied a pass to brother Tom who dribbled around the Pool goalkeeper to score.
Mathews netted his second 11 minutes later and the hosts took a three goal advantage shortly after through Paul Hutson.
Nathan Addy extended Meltham’s lead to 4-0 and Kirk Jacobs scored a fifth Athletic goal before half-time.
Meltham keeper Adam Lawlor was forced into action early after the re-start with Pool grabbing two goals within the first 22 minutes of the half.
But, despite an indifferent second-half performance, Meltham managed to hold on for the win.
