Amateur football: Smith grabs four-goal haul

FOUR goals for Connor Smith gave Kirkheaton Under 11s a solid 7-1 win over Netherton.

Both sides have been struggling at the foot of Division II and this victory will be a welcome boost for Kirkheaton, whose other goals were scored by Harry Lumb, James Stanley and Billy Dyson.

Netherton’s reply came from James Shepherd.

Batley Phoenix stay top of Division III in the Under 11s thanks to a narrow 3-2 win over promotion rivals Savile Youth.

Raqeeb Rehman and Mohammed Amin threatened Batley’s 10-game unbeaten run but replies from Joseph Hewitt (2) and Clarkson ensured the victory.

Dalton Dynamoes maintained their promotion push in the same section with a comfortable 8-1 win over Waterloo Wanderers.

A Liam Haigh hat trick, two apiece for Jarlath Mohan and Callum Carmody and one from Jovanni Landu ensured a valuable three points for Dalton.

Upperthong’s win over Lepton Highlanders provided a welcome boost for the Division IV outfit.

Mid-table Lepton scored through Callum Inglesfield (2) and William Howarth to set Upperthong a stern test, but replies from Callum Littlewood (2), Josh Jessop and Kieran Dawson ensured Upperthong’s second win of the season.

Another team with an unbeaten run to protect are Collegians Under 13s, whose 5-1 win at Howden Clough keeps them firmly among the Division I leaders.

Howden Clough found the net once, but two goals for Ben Harrison and one each for Aiden Fisher, Junaid Rana and Daniel Ramsden did the job for Collegians.

Goals from Oliver Whitehead (2), Cameron Burnhill and Cameron Bell gave Gomersal Under 13s a vital three points at Vision.

Wyke-based Vision scored through Richard Brestley and David Adamson but the three points went to Gomersal, who retain second place in Division II.

The top division of the Under 15 age group is one of the toughest in the RCD League and, with many of last year’s leading teams having a difficult start this time around, the outcome of the title is anyone’s guess.

Silkstone were runners-up in the Under 14s but they have already lost five of their nine games so far this season.

Likewise, Lepton Highlanders finished in third place but, with only one win from five games so far, the Highlanders were third from bottom before Sunday’s game at Skelmanthorpe.

Jason Stocks and Jordan Haigh were on target for Skelmanthorpe but replies from Ben Robinson, Declan McGivern and Joseph Sommerville gave Lepton a 3-2 victory and a much-needed three points to move them up the table.

In the Under 17s, Linthwaite returned to league action after representing Huddersfield in the West Riding Minor Cup.

Home side Ossett Albion were unable to find an answer as Elliot Chambers (2), Mark McSherry and Josh Shields kept Linthwaite’s title challenge on track with a 4-0 win.

Kirkburton stay among the Under 17 Division II leaders thanks to a close 4-3 victory against Thornhill.

Kirkburton needed two goals each from Owen Gibson and Thomas Smith to overcome Thornhill’s target, which was set by Michael Williams (2) and Tom Hirst.
