Amateur Football: Storthes Hall looking upwards after Marsden victory
Jan 27 2010 by Dougie Thomson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
STORTHES HALL hope their derby win at leaders Marsden will spark a climb away from the foot of the West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division table.
The 3-1 victory, sealed by Jamie Miller, Peter Jowett and Andy Haigh, was the Hall’s first of the season in the league.
Now they aim to secure a second at home to Tyersal on Saturday to boost hopes of avoiding a first-ever relegation.
The Hall made a flying start in the Fall Lane derby, with Haigh bringing two saves from Ash Connor and Miller having a shot cleared off the line.
The pressure finally paid off in the 25th minute, when Miller headed home from a Rob Morris free-kick.
Michael Tunnacliffe’s full-blooded volley was blocked before the second arrived on the half hour when Jowett netted after Haigh hit a post.
Marsden got back into it five minutes later when the quick-thinking Jon Newiss took possession from a throw-in, cut inside and shot home.
But the two-goal cushion was restored in the 53rd minute when Haigh fired home from Chris Mulvihill’s cross.
Connor’s late save denied Haigh a second while Marsden’s frustration at only a third league defeat was reflected by two red cards late on.
Wibsey leapfrogged Huddersfield’s Bay Athletic to go second, a point behind Marsden with a game in hand, thanks to a 3-0 win over Brighouse.
Bay are a point behind Marsden with two games in hand while Golcar United are fifth.
