Junior Football: Westend Lions roar to victory against Thornhill in Under 11 RCD League Cup
WESTEND LIONS gained revenge for their league defeat earlier in the season by knocking Thornhill Under 11s out of the RCD League Cup.
Three goals in the first 10 minutes gave them control of the second-round tie and they went on to win 4-0.
Luke France got the home side off to the perfect start when he drilled home a Harun Townend right wing cross to give Westend the lead after just two minutes.
Luke Frazer, Jack Haigh and Jacob Maan worked hard to try to get Thornhill back in the game and they almost equalised moments later, but Connor Searby was denied by a superb Oliver Millard save.
Thornhill were slow to react as, from Millard’s kick, France was allowed to run clear and drill home a second for the Lions after only six minutes.
The busy Jack Haigh looked to have done enough to pull one back for his side but keeper Millard once again pulled off a fine fingertip save to deny the Thornhill captain.
The visitors continued to produce some dangerous attacking play but, defenders Joe Dagger, Luke Sapsford, Joe Falconio and Adil Arshad were equal to the task and the Thornhill threat was rarely able to threaten Millard’s goal.
It was 3-0 on 10 minutes when Jake Morton’s long run on the left proved worthwhile as he slammed an unstoppable shot into the top corner.
A stunned Thornhill were going to need some inspiration if they were to recover but, when keeper Millard produced another fine save to deny another Haigh shot, Westend were, again, quick to mount a counter attack from which Morton hit a fourth for the home side to secure a 4-0 half-time lead.
Oliver Rayner, Ben McGreevy and Marc Kennedy never gave up trying for Thornhill and Jack Haigh continued to be a threat throughout the game, but they were unable to break through the Westend rearguard.
In the third round, Westend face their toughest test so far with a trip to Division I title chasers Dewsbury Rangers.
