Amateur Football: Wellington into the Kirklees Sunday League’s Get Smart Cup final
WELLINGTON A had goalkeeper Dom Harris to thank for a man-of-the-match performance as they reached the Get Smart Insurance Cup final.
While Eddie Hamlet scored the only goal of the semi-final against Meltham Victoria Park, Harris was in inspired form to help repel immense second-half pressure.
His efforts mean his side will meet Huddersfield Irish in the showpiece at AFC Emley’s Welfare Ground next Sunday, April 22.
The decisive goal came after only 14 minutes when Dan Waddington split the Meltham defence with a great pass and Hamlet nipped through to send a lob over the advancing keeper.
Wellington continued to press and make chances with Rob Mitchell driving the team on, but they couldn’t break through again in the first half, when Meltham’s main threat came from corners, long throws and free kicks.
Meltham started the second half on the front foot, putting Wellington under constant pressure, and they had several chances to draw level but Harris kept them at Bay.
Jim Hamby then hit the woodwork for Meltham, while, two minutes from time, Gareth Bradley made a goalline clearance to preserve the Wellington lead.
Meltham dominated 75% of the second half but it wasn’t to be their day and the club wished Wellington all the best for the final.
Huddersfield Irish beat Rose and Crown on penalties 4-3 after the scores were tied at 2-2 after 90 minutes and extra-time.
Kieran Ryan scored for Irish (he also missed a penalty) before Austin Bedeau levelled.
Mathew Mulvihill made it 2-1 to Irish but, again, Dean Wharam levelled after 85 mins with a brilliant header.
Rose played most of the game with only 10 men after a sending off, but they played with great determination and were unlucky to be beaten
