Scholes promoted to Division I of Huddersfield District League
TWELVE months ago, Division II side Scholes went into the last match knowing a win would have given them promotion.
They lost and remained in Division II. On Tuesday, they played their last match knowing the title, promotion or neither was possible.
Their opponents Meltham Ath took an early lead and Scholes supporters must have feared the worst. However, they turned around at half time at 1-1 and two excellent headers gave them a 3-1 win and the title. Promoted with them will be Royal Dolphins.
The only matter to be sorted out in Division I was who was to be relegated along with Britannia Sports. A defeat at the hands of Netherton results in Slaithwaite returning to Division II after just one season in top flight.
Moldgreen Con gained the Division IV title as AFC Lindley failed to raise a team. This is becoming an annual problem. Up to March 24, there were only 11 unfulfilled fixtures but, since March 31, there has been 18 and still counting.
In Reserve Division One, Uppermill and Newsome have been neck-and-neck for a few weeks.
On Tuesday at Uppermill, a goal from Shaw gave Newsome all three points. This was followed by another win ‘over the top’ at Diggle on Thursday and those six points sealed the title for Newsome – the first time they have won this division.
The only outstanding divisional issue is almost certainly heading for a play-off. Meltham Ath are six points clear of Uppermill B. Meltham have finished their fixtures but from the League table, it appears that Uppermill B have two to play. Not so – in one of their games, their opponents failed to fulfil the fixture and in the other, the match was abandoned. The League Council will decide on both these matches.
