A JUNIOR football team is changing its name – and joining forces with a cricket club.
The Junior Collegians will now be known as Birchencliffe Junior Football Club and will be based at Birchencliffe Cricket and Athletic Club.
Alan Meredith, club development officer, said the club would be part of a sporting hub with the cricket team, the athletics club and Lindley Swifts rugby league.
The club will retain its independence but the might of the sporting teams means they can offer more chances for young people to get involved in sport.
Alan said: “It is hoped that the change in name will provide the football club with a local identity and boost player recruitment.
“The cricket club will also provide a base for social and fund raising activities together with match day catering facilities.
“Membership of the football club will include full family membership of the cricket club.”
They’re also aiming to create a mini-soccer team for Under 9s and training starts at the club next Saturday, June 16, at 9.30am.
