AFC Emley raring to take on leaders Athersley Rec after 5-2 win at Askern Villa in the Northern Counties East League Division I

BUOYANT AFC Emley take on leaders Athersley Rec at the Welfare Ground tomorrow bidding to make it six wins in succession.

Darren Hepworth’s side are raring to go after scoring a 5-2 win at Askern Villa in midweek.

Steve Kenworthy was man of the match as Emley moved up to fourth in the Northern Counties East League Division I table in terrific style.

Askern are in difficulty. A spate of injuries and suspensions caused them to postpone their previous game and manager Brian Johnston had made nine new signings in the build-up to the Emley visit.

Emley opened the scoring on three minutes when Leon Cusworth turned the ball into his own net and they went on to dominate.

Kenworthy got in on the act after 31 minutes with a well-worked diving-header goal from a move involving Anthony Haigh and Doran Jordan.

To their credit, Askern then created some chances and hit the woodwork before half time, and they reduced the deficit on 62 minutes with a well-taken Jake Stephenson strike.

Hepworth made an inspired substitution when sending on Brad Riley, and he scored with a superb shot just three minutes later.

A Levi Maturine penalty 13 minutes from time extended the lead, Matty Holmes clawed back a second for Askern but Kenworthy’s replacement, Ash Flynn, netted a fifth and took his personally tally for the season to 12 to round off the scoring
