Substitutes Alan Lee and Danny Ward, who made a surprise return after more than two months out with a broken metatarsal, scored late goals after Scott McDonald’s 79th minute strike for Middlesbrough to clinch a dramatic victory that lifted Town to 16th in the table – six points above the drop zone.

It was a second win for Robins, who has now had six matches in charge and he added: “Apart form the chances we spurned before scoring, I thought we were excellent and deserved the win.

“With a bit more composure in front of goal, it might well have been a win by more, but I was pleased with the way worked so hard and the spirit in the team was terrific.

“It was epitomised by the equaliser when Danny Ward put in the corner and the skipper Peter Clarke broke his nose while heading it into the danger area, where Alan Lee scored with his first touch.

“That got us back into the game and gave us a real boost because it looked like we were flagging, which has been something of a theme.

“This time we lifted ourselves and it just shows that the harder you work the luckier you become.”

Ward’s winner was drilled in from outside the area and Robins added: “I’ve been desperate to get Danny involved. It was a bit of a risk to bring him on but it paid off.”

It was Town’s first win over Boro since 1986 having lost all the of the previous seven meetings between the sides.
