Golf: More matches move

Only five of the 13 clubs who attended the Union meeting called to clarify the new rules governing the situation, indicated by a show of hands that it is their intention to field girls in their teams.

Ten clubs, much to the disappointment of officials, missed the meeting – Crow Nest Park, Halifax, Hanging Heaton, Hebden Bridge, Lightcliffe, Queensbury, Ryburn, Todmorden, Willow Valley and Woodsome Hall.

Those attending were Bradley Park, Castlefields, Crosland Heath, Dewsbury, Elland, Halifax Bradley Hall, Huddersfield, Longley Park, Marsden, Meltham, Outlane, Saddleworth and West End.

Union president Philip Walton reminded clubs that junior league rules had been changed in order to facilitate junior girls playing in league matches, and that it is for a trial period of two years with a review to be held after one year.

A club intending to play a girl in their team, should inform their opposition prior to a match in order to ensure that ladies facilities are available for junior girls.

Keith Waddington (Bradley Park) has agreed to be a liaison officer between the Union and clubs, and every club was asked to ensure he receives match results and any issues of concern and benefit.

On a matter of chaperones for girls, it was pointed out that responsibility lay with a club which includes a girl in their team, though one representative said his club, among those in favour of girls in junior teams, would not be providing chaperones.

It was made clear that matches cannot be claimed on this issue nor can there be a refusal to play.

It is thought at most junior matches that there will be enough people in attendance to overcome any absence of a chaperone.
