Golf: Shaw pipped for Trophy

FIXBY’S Andy Shaw looked a good bet for a first Eagle Golf-Yorkshire Order of Merit win when he breezed through the first round of the Hawksworth Trophy at Bradford with an impressive 67, four under the standard scratch score.

But he fell back with a 73 as veteran Roger Roper, a former international who plays out of Wike Ridge, after spending his most successful years at Catterick, shot a sparkling 66 to steal victory from Shaw and three others finishing a stroke back.

Shaw’s had to settle for fifth place on count back while Fixby clubmate Richard Broadley, a past winner at Bradford, claimed sixth place.

Leading scores: 139 - R Roper (Wike Ridge) 73 66. 140 - D Appleyard (South Leeds) 70 70, J Firth (Baildon) 68 72, P Thomas (West Bradford) 69 71, A Shaw (Huddersfield) 67 73. 143 - R Broadley (Huddersfield) 70 73. 145 - T Hesketh (Oakdale) 74 71, M Atter (Bradford) 70 75, A Sagar (Keighley) 75 70, A Jones (Moortown) 70 75. Others included: 147 - S Bridges (West End) 75 72. 150 - B Crowther (Dewsbury) 75 75. 153 - J Ellison (Huddersfield) 80 73. 155 - C Ingham (West End) 80 75, D Stafford (Todmorden) 72 83. 162 - D Overend (Woodsome Hall) 81 81.

A shot dropped to par cost Chris Hanson a share of top spot in the PGA North Region’s long-running Brough Ladies pro-am.
