Golf: Shaw pipped for Trophy

While the Crosland Heath man finished on one over despite counting three twos in five birdies, Allerthorpe Park’s James Drinkall carried off the title on level par 68.

Hanson has entered the Leeds Cup, a North Region showpiece event at Leeds (Cobble Hall) in August that carries Order of Merit points.

He needs to pre-qualify and will seek to do so on May 18 at Sale when West End professional David Rishworth also makes a bid.

Leading scores: 68 - J Drinkall (Allerthorpe Park, £515). 69 - C Hanson (Crosland Heath, £370). 70 - S Townend (Wilpshire, £250), D Greenwood (Forest Pines, £250). 71 - W Lockett (Cleckheaton), N Ludwell (Selby), G Walker (The Oaks). 72 - S Raybould (Bridlington Links), G Brown (Ganton), J King (Lindrick), D Padgett (Pannal). Also: 78 - P Carman (Huddersfield).

Paul Carman teamed with Halifax’s David Delaney to head the West Yorkshire Alliance professional line-up against the amateurs in the annual match for the Sam Smiths Trophy at Howley Hall.

Fixby’s Carman and Delaney beat Alliance president David Hughes and fellow Fixby amateur Robert Turner by one hole in the fourballs then won by 3 and 2 against the same pair in the greensomes.

The professionals eased in 4-0 in the fourballs then took the greensomes 3-1 to retain the trophy.

Longley Park defend the Halifax, Huddersfield Union NIne Holes Clubs Team championship at Elland tomorrow.

They finished 14 strokes clear of runners-up Queensbury at Marsden last season.
