Golf: Paul Carman ready for Glenmuir qualifying test
May 30 2009 By John Martin
PAUL CARMAN, the Fixby professional, will be out to emulate assistant Alex Keighley on Monday by advancing to the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at Dundonald Links on June 16-19.
Keighley qualified for the women’s equivalent championship, also to be staged at the same Ayrshire venue near Troon on June 18-19, by winning the Glenmuir WPGA qualifier at Dunham Forest, Cheshire, earlier this month.
Past champion Carman has been working hard on sharpening up his game in readiness for Monday when the north-east qualifier for the showcase event for British and Irish club professionals is staged at Moortown, Leeds, scene of the final last year, but it is a big ask for any of the 93 players to grab one of the 18 spots on offer.
He is one of 10 local professionals and assistants who bid for places in the Glenmuir.
Darren Arber (West End) leads off the field at 7.40am and is followed by Willow Valley pair Darren Rands and Lee Shepherd, Robert Booth (Halifax), David Delaney (Halifax), Gareth Murray (Queensbury), John Ambler (Longley Park), Julian Haworth (Willow Valley) and David Astin (Woodsome Hall).
