Golf: Alan's prize

OUTLANE player Alan Henderson knocked out Halifax, Huddersfield Union man Rob Scollick of Woodsome Hall in the Intermediate round of the Examiner Matchplay Golf tournament.

Henderson beat Scollick 3&2 to book himself a spot in the last 16, where he will be joined by Meltham’s Roy Johnson who triumphed over Huddersfield’s Martin Mitchell, winning on the 19th at Fixby.

Johnson was heading for defeat trailing by one hole after the 17th, but he managed to win the par five 18th to make the match all square, and then despite having to concede a stroke down the first, still managed to win the hole and move into the second round of the competition.

In the draw for the second round, two former Examiner Overseas Challenge winners, Tommy Ward (who lifted the trophy in Portugal) and Steve Whiteley (a winner in Tenerife) will clash at Longley Park as the two regular members of the Examiner Overseas trip both chase a FREE week this year in Benidorm.

Fixby’s Jonny Heyes, a regular finalist in the Examiner Matchplay, has home advantage against Woolley Park’s Michael Kirk, although he will be giving away seven points start on handicap.

Ironically, both Intermediate round winners Henderson and Johnson meet each other in the next stage at Meltham, meanwhile two former Drakes League cricketers, Paul Booth and Chris Holmes, will meet at Crosland Heath.

The closing date for completion of the second round is Sunday, July 26, with all results to be received by David Lockwood at the Examiner Office no later than the following day.

All competitors should note it is the sole responsibility of the HOME player to get in touch with his opponent and arrange a date for the match to be played, convenient to both men. Failure to do so will result in disqualification of the home player.

This year the semi-finals and final are being staged at Meltham, on Thursday, September 24.

The semi-finals will be played out in the morning, with the losers playing off for third and fourth place in the afternoon, followed by the winners, who will contest the final to win a place on the Examiner Overseas Challenge to Benidorm, leaving on November 5.

The prize includes an eight-day holiday, with accommodation at the four-star Hotel Melia in Benidorm, with five rounds of golf at the Levante and Poniente courses.

The full second round draw is:

Tommy Ward (Longley Park, 13) v Steve Whiteley (Meltham, 11); John Doherty (Longley Park, 6) v Michael O’Hara (Bradley Park, 9); Jonny Heyes (Huddersfield, 6) v Michael Kirk (Woolley Park, 13); Darren Whiting (Headley, 9) v Gary Shuttleworth (Bradley Hall, 11); Ben Sharpe (Wortley, 7) v Andrew Mear (Cleckheaton, 8); Roy Johnson (Meltham, 13) v Alan Henderson (Outlane, 19); Geoff Heady (Woodsome Hall, 17) v Ian Saxton (Meltham, 7); Paul Booth (Crosland Heath, 6) v Chris Holmes (Meltham, 5).
