Golf: John Cocking is the man of the moment

JOHN COCKING celebrated his installation as the new President of the Huddersfield and District Golf Clubs’ Past Captains Association by claiming yet another victory in this week’s Huddersfield Wednesday Society meeting at a windy Outlane.

The Marsden golfer, who has recently been made an Honorary Life Member at the Hemplow club after an outstanding 56 years membership there, beat 36 other players to win the Division I section with 36 points, from fellow clubmate David Braithwaite with 35.

Outlane’s Stuart Eastwood soared to an eight-point victory over his nearest rival Tom Freeland, from Meltham, in Division II, the latter edging second place on a back nine countback from Marsden’s Alan Harper.

John Sheard was installed as the new Wednesday Society captain, while Steve Braithwaite was elected president.

The next meeting is at Meltham next week.

Division I: John Cocking (Marsden) 11-36; David Braithwaite (Marsden) 12-35; Neil Smith (Outlane) 13-34.

Division II: Stuart Eastwood (Outlane) 18-42, Tom Freeland (Meltham) 16-34, Alan Harper (Marsden) 19-34.

There are still one or two places available for either pairs or four-man team to take place in the Forget-Me-Not-Trust Spring Golf Day at Fixby, next Friday, April 15.

It is an 18-hole four-man team competition with a shotgun start.

Anyone interested in playing should contact organiser and fundraiser Gina Fielding, on 01484 487570.
