PETE NEWEY and Mike Dempsey lifted the Ronnie Parkinson Trophy after a scorching round at Todmorden in the penultimate Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance meeting of the season.
The dynamic Independent Fixby duo, who are just about the most prolific prize-winning partnership around at the moment, bagged an excellent 43 points to topple low handicap leaders Adam Walker (3) and Aaron Schnake (1) from Longley Park and Fixby, who had earlier returned 42 points.
Home duo Terry Makin (10) and Michael Hartley (10) also recorded a 43-point tally, but had to settle for second place with Newey (15) and Dempsey (10) taking the trophy – awarded in memory of the late Ronnie Parkinson, who for many years was the Alliance secretary – who had a better back nine.
Todmorden captain Vincent Korobczke presented the trophy to Dempsey and Newey.
The course was in excellent condition for April, with fast greens, more akin to mid-June which no doubt helped the scoring.
Unfortunately, the Pro-Am section was very badly supported with just three pairs contesting the prize, the winners coming from West End, with professional Darren Arber being partnered by 17-handicapper Steve Boustead who scored 39 points, to take first place from Bradley Park’s Jack Pearcey and G Armstrong.
