Golf: Crosland Heath reveal exciting new competition for winter

CROSLAND HEATH are launching an exciting and innovative new competition, aimed at giving golfers the chance to play in a brand new major tournament during the Winter months.

The Crosland Heath Winter Challenge Series, is a five-date competition, running from October to March, and culminating in a Grand Final in April 2012.

The Felks Stile Road course, designed by Alister MacKenzie (of Augusta fame), is one of the highest golf courses in the country and probably one of, if not the best draining course, which makes for a superb winter course with play possible virtually all-year round.

The new tournament is a Fourball Am-Am open to all golfers holding an active CONGU, with a maximum handicap of 24 for men and 30 for ladies (three-quarter handicap).

The cost is £100 per team, with includes coffee and bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes of golf, followed by a two-course dinner, with prizes and a chance to qualify for the Grand Final next Spring.

The first of the five-day Series starts on Tuesday, October 25, followed by the second on Tuesday, November 22 and the final one in 2011 on Tuesday, December 20, when there is also a Christmas Dinner.

The Series then resumes in 2012 with the final two days on Tuesday, February 7 and Tuesday, March 13.

Each day’s competition has a shotgun start at 10.30am, and the top two teams from each event will then qualify for the Grand Final, which is being held on Sunday, April 22.

Many clubs struggle to have meaningful competitions during the Winter months, with the exception perhaps of the Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance competitions, and most clubs have to go onto temporary tees and greens during the worst of the weather.

So the Crosland Heath Winter Challenge is a real opportunity for golfers to get some serious action on one of the best ‘Winter Courses’ in Yorkshire.

Entries can be made either by phone, e-mail or posting to Crosland Heath Golf Club, Felks Stile Road, Huddersfield HD4 7AF, or by phoning the club professional Richard Lambert, on 01484 653877.

DEWSBURY District staged the latest outing for the Wednesday Golf Society, and it was the host club members who walked off with the prizes.

In Division I, it was Dewsbury captain Rod Burgin who clinched the first prize, thanks to a countback over Crosland Heath’s Alan Taylor, both men notching 31 points, while the Heath’s Ian Sharland was a further point behind in third place.

And it was the same result in Division II, where regular winner Jimmy Main was again in the frame with a winning score of 32 points. Society president John Sheard from Bradley Park was second ahead of Outlane’s Stuart Sheard, again on countback.

The next meeting is at Longley Park.

Division I: Rob Burgin (Dewsbury District) 12-31; Alan Taylor (Crosland Heath) 12-31; Ian Sharland (Crosland Heath) 14-30.

Division II: Jimmy Main (Dewsbury District) 16-32; John Sheard (Bradley Park) 18-31; Stuart Eastwood (Outlane) 18-31.
