THE September sun shone on golfers competing in the first Halifax, Huddersfield District Alliance of the new season at Crow Nest Park, but it was Crosland Heath’s assistant pro Rob Stansfield, who sparkled along with his partner Luke Pilkington.

The Heath combination were late starters, chasing Bradley Hall’s pro Rob Booth and partner Andy Hare who had led the Pro-Am section most of the day with an excellent score of 43 points, which included no fewer than seven gross birdies.

But Stansfield and his partner were in terrific form, and it was four-handicapper Pilkington who landed a killer blow at the 288-yard seventh when he holed for a gross eagle, which ultimately led them to a winning score of 44 points.

That excellent total was matched in the Am-Am by home club members Nick Day (7) and his partner, ex-pro Chris Mowl (1), who finished two points clear of three pairs, with Bradley Hall’s Mick Appleyard (6) and Steve Sandie (5) nudging second place on countback.

The winners’ round included a nett eagle for Day at the Stroke 1 412-yard second, while Mowl nailed a gross eagle on the 514-yard last hole, while Appleyard was another to eagle the second the second time around.

Bradley Park’s Trevor Williams was welcomed as the Alliance president for the 2011-12 season.

The next event is at Todmorden, on Tuesday, September 27.
