FIXBY golfer Sandra Paul has successfully defended her Yorkshire Veterans title in a tightly-fought and rain-affected competition at Scarcroft Golf Club, Leeds.
Sandra took the title after birdying the 17th hole to win 2 and 1 against Huddersfield Golf Club teammate Pat Wrightson.
She said: “It is fantastic to defend the title and win for the second year running. I am really happy with my game right now and it all came together on the day.”
The competition should have been done and dusted over a month ago, but rain caused the final day's play to be abandoned on May 9, due to the Scarcroft course being under water.
Huddersfield’s veteran lady golfers led the way, with three of the four semi-finalists coming from local clubs. They were: Sandra Paul and Pat Wrightson from Fixby and Gill Travis from Crosland Heath. The fourth was new vet Julie Wheeldon of Wakefield Golf Club, who Sandra beat on the 19th in the semis.
Unfortunately, early on the morning of May 9, Gill Travis, scheduled to play Pat Wrightson in the semis, withdrew due to a stomach bug. When the match was rescheduled, Pat said she would rather play Gill than take the walkover. But, after checking, the Yorkshire Veteran Ladies Golf Association (YVLGA) ruled that Gill was not eligible to play.
Host for next year’s Vets competition is Meltham and Sandra added: “I’ll definitely be there at Meltham next year to try and make it three in a row.”
