Century duo are making history!

TWO men, two centuries, both from Springwood BC, and each creating a special bit of Huddersfield history.

Robert Armitage and Tony Clegg both scorched to 100 breaks in the Huddersfield Snooker and Billiards League to stake their claim for the highest breaks of the season.

But, amazingly, neither break went to the man expected to do it!

For it was former Huddersfield Open Snooker champion Armitage who clocked 101 in his billiards match against Bradley & Colnebridge’s Frank Griffin, while reigning Open Billiards champion Clegg was the man to top the ton in his snooker frame against Lower Hopton’s Kent Matthews.

And it is widely believed among players of both disciplines that Armitage and Clegg are the first men in Huddersfield ever to score centuries in League matches at both billiards and snooker.

And, remarkably, they achieved the distinction within 48 hours of each other.

Armitage, who plays his snooker at Marsh Liberal Club but pops down to nearby Springwood to play billiards, has made several centuries at snooker, but his 101 against Griffin was the first he had ever recorded in the three-ball game.

Similarly, Clegg, who is an eight-times winner of the Billiards Championship, has frequently posted tons at his preferred sport, but the 102 made against Matthews was a definite snooker first.

Having been handed a few points from a couple of foul strokes, Clegg stepped in to clear 13 reds with colours (seven blacks, five pinks, one blue) and then took yellow and green before the break ended.

Robert Read has reached the last 32 in the National CIU Snooker Championship and now plays George Mack, from Thornhill at Lindley WMC, next Friday, January 25 (7.30).

Read benefited from a first-round bye, followed by a walkover in the second round, before beating his only opponent to date, from Wakefield, 3-1 to set up the fourth-round clash at his home club.
