Aussie Rules: History in making as Aussie Rules arrives

The nine-a-side matches start at 1.00 and 3.00 respectively, but there are plenty of other attractions, including an open training session for 11 to 15-year-olds from 10.00 until 11.30.

The Rams go into derby action having had a Saturday off following the postponement of their clash with Birmingham because of problems with host club Liverpool’s pitch.

“Playing in Huddersfield is the culmination of a dream,” explained Morrison, who had a spell with famous Melbourne club Essendon as a youngster.

“I’ve been over in Huddersfield for five years after meeting my wife Lucy when she worked at my sister’s vineyard in Tumbarumba, New South Wales.

“She was travelling and when she returned, I soon followed her back.

“I was always talking about setting up a footy team in Huddersfield, but never quite got around to it.

“Then Lucy was looking on the web for information about Collingwood, the team I’ve supported since I was a boy.

“She came across a story about Karl setting up the Rams and made a note of his number, and it went from there.

“It’s gone brilliantly so far, and for me, it’s fantastic to be able to play footy again and have a laugh with the boys.

“We’ve got a great link with Huddersfield Rugby Union Club, whose facilities are superb, and to be able to give this town a taste of Aussie Rules is fantastic.

“We’re a sociable bunch, and anyone who wants to come down to Lockwood Park on Saturday and have a look is more than welcome.”
