Tennis: Battle at top gets hotter

MELTHAM Phoenix kept themselves in the running for promotion from Division Four of the Huddersfield and District Men’s Tennis League despite still sitting below halfway in the table.

So tight is the battle for the top in the section that Meltham’s 10-5 win over Shepley B saw little movement in the standings.

Just three points separate leaders Tingley A from fifth in the table Meltham with Shepley B, Grove and Oakfield B all firmly in the running to take the step up.

The Phoenix victory was a personal celebration for Martin Latham.

Celebrating his 49th birthday he returned five unbeaten sets as he partnered Stephen Mellor to success.
